Have you ever lost your car keys?

We sure have. It’s enough to drive anyone crazy, especially when you have no idea how long it will take to replace your car keys or whether the bill is going to set you back a few thousand dollars!

In this article, we will address what to do if you lose your car key and how to never lose them again!

Traditional Car Key

Depending on your car’s make and model, there may be a few different ways to access your vehicle. In some cases, your car may have an extra key you can grab inside its owner’s manual. If not, take a look under the driver or passenger side door panel for a plastic container with a barcode label on it; in many cases, there will be another key hidden inside of it. If all else fails, call up a locksmith and have them cut you one.

Unfortunately, unless your car key is a traditional key, you will have to get your car fob, and transponder replaced by the car dealer.

Car Key Fob

The fastest way to replace your car keys is at a dealer because they have access to all replacement parts and the tool to program the fob. Dealerships will charge you as much as $150 for a new key fob that is supposed to cost around $40. That’s where aftermarket car parts come in. Aftermarket car parts are typically less expensive, but in the end, you still need to get the keyfob programmed at the dealer.

Transponder Key

A transponder key is a small, electronic chip in your car’s key fob that communicates with your vehicle. When you press your key fob button to unlock your doors or start your car, it sends a signal that unlocks and starts your car without leaving you defenseless while you wait for it to warm up. If you don’t have one of these special keys—and are starting your engine using an old-fashioned physical key—you’re not alone: most of us just stick our physical keys in our pocket or purse. But if we do lose our keys, it can be tough replacing them quickly because we typically need both new physical and transponder keys from the dealer.

Smart Key

Keyless entry is an increasingly popular option and can make your life a lot easier. But, if you lose your keys, it can also make things very complicated. If you lose, you will have no other choice than to get it replaced by your local car dealer.
